CHAPTER ELEVEN
The Florida sun beat down on the Volkswagen. Holly approached the gates to the Santiago estate. It was morning, but the humidity was creeping up. It felt a like a sauna inside the car.
She rolled her window down for air conditioning, but little rivulets of sweat slid down the middle of her back. She leaned slightly forward and hoped to avoid damp areas on the back of her silk tank top. When she leaned forward, there wasnât a whole lot left to the imagination.
Sheâd have to remember to bend over when she was with Victor. That would be something that would probably pique his interest.
If sheâd been able to get it past the huge lump in the middle of her throat, she would have smiled at the thought.
Gino had given her a new assignment when she dropped by this morning. She was supposed to check a private club. They were sure someone was stealing their liquor, but they couldnât figure out who or how.
Over the last few weeks, cases of the stuff were disappearing, and no one admitted to knowing anything about it. Hollyâs assignment was to watch and see if she could figure out how they were stealing it. It meant sitting in the bar for a few hours on every shift. Not terribly challenging, but it would help to pay the bills.
She could set her own hours. She needed to cover all the shifts at some point. It would allow her to manage that assignment and this one.
Holly drove past the dark van parked in a driveway a few feet from the Santiago gates.
She resisted an impulse to wave. If Jace hadnât told her that was their lookout, she probably wouldnât have even noticed it. She hadnât the previous time sheâd visited.
The car stopped and she reached over to push the black button.
âYes?â
âHi. Itâs Holly Devine. Iâd like to see Mr. Santiago please.â
There was dead silence. Then the gates swung back.
She drove slowly through the gate, past the manicured lawn and colorful flowers. The last time sheâd been here, sheâd practically raced to get away from the man. Now she was back.
What was she thinking of? What made her think she could do this?
She was about to find out if she really could do it.
The front door opened. Victor Santiago stepped out onto the step and waited for her to get out of her car.
Holly opened the door and slid her legs out. Her skirt rode up past her thighs. She tried to jerk it down when she stood up.
Santiago smiled. He observed her struggle to hitch her skirt down. He appeared to approve of her outfit. He watched her turn and trip across the driveway and up the stairs. His eyes followed her. They moved slowly up and down her body in obvious appreciation.
She swallowed hard and tried not to blush.
He picked up her hand when she reached the step and kissed the back of it. He turned it over and kissed her palm, slowly and sensuously.
